Tutorial #17: Boon & Bane
Boon is a special effect that represents an advantage gained for anything from a special blessing to good roleplaying. Bane is a similar special effect that instead represents a disadvantage. They can be applied by certain effects or by the Host at their own discretion. They can apply any time dice are rolled. Boon and Bane both add dice to the roll. Boon is notated as Boon:# and Bane is notated as Bane:#. The number is the number of extra dice rolled. Boon and Bane should be considered to cancel each other out so that in the end there should be either Boon or Bane applied, not both.
When applying Boon, roll the appropriate number of extra dice, then remove an equal number of the lowest dice as if they were not part of the roll. 1's cannot be removed by Boon. Bane is the opposite and you remove an equal number of the highest dice as if they were not part of the roll. 12's cannot be removed by Bane.
As example, examine the following roll with two extra dice:
12, 10, 9, 6, 6, 5, 3, 2, 2
In the case of Boon:2, then both 2’s would be removed and ignored, being the lowest two dice. This would leave the Roll with a total of three uncancelled positive results (remembering to count the Epic 12 as two).
In the case of Bane:2, the 10 and 9 would be removed and ignored, being the highest two non-12 dice. This would leave the roll with a total of 1 uncanceled negative result.
This concludes Tutorial #17: Boon & Bane. You should now be ready to play the game using the advanced Wave 2 rules.
