Tutorial #4: Ranges
Ranges are measured in terms of inches. Since players can use pieces or miniatures that have different sized bases, distances are measured from the center of one figure to the center of another. If the center cannot be easily determined, do the best you can. The important part is to be consistent.
Along the similar lines, since 3-dimensional movement is allowed, there will sometimes be height differences. At what point height differences begin to affect Range depends on the situation and the sizes of the characters involved. The Host will have the final say on questionable Ranges when they would make a difference.
There are a few ranges that are commonly used. The first of these is called Melee Range. Melee is measured as a distance of 3” center to center. This represents the reach at which you can reach out to touch or Strike another character.
The next common range applies to most Ranged Strikes, Spiritual Effects, & Songs. That range is 12” center to center.
Spears and a few Spiritual Effects use 7” Range.
40” is considered the general Range at which details may begin to be Perceived, although Messengers can break this generality fairly often.
Most other Ranges are used too infrequently to be considered Standard in any way.
This concludes Tutorial #4: Ranges. In the next Tutorial we will cover Rolls, Results, & Adjusting Dice.
